Chin Filler / Chin Augmentation
Chin Filler / Chin Augmentation
What is Chin Augmentation
Some people feel that they have a disproportionately small chin in relation to the rest of the features of their face. In the past the only way to correct this would be with major surgery which involved breaking and repositioning the jaw. More recently chin implants became a better alternative, however, this still involved invasive surgery which could result in scarring and fibrotic tissue forming around the implant. With the developments in dermal fillers it is now possible to achieve a reshaping of the jaw with injectables.
Using naturally occurring hyaluronic acid dermal filler means no surgery, virtually no downtime (apart from a small amount of bruising and swelling) and the freedom of the practitioner to tailor make a treatment to an individual as they aren’t using preformed implants.
The filler can recontour the chin completely, or simply enhance and define as the patient requires. It can also correct any deficiencies and deep-set lines in the chin.
What To Expect After Chin Augmentation Treatment
- There may be some mild discomfort during treatment, either when the injection takes place or during the massage that ensures a smooth contour, although many patients find it relatively pain-free. We use topical and injected anaesthetic to reduce the pain to a minimum.
- There may be some bruising and/or mild swelling but these normally disappear in around a week.
- The filler will settle down within a few days and will feel soft and an integral part of the skin around the chin.
- We will dispense some arnica gel to take home and massage into the treated area and this will reduce any inflammation and swelling.
Arnica is also very effective at reducing bruising and minimising and bruises in and around the chin.
How Long Does Chin Augmentation/Filler Treatment Last
Hyaluronic acid fillers last from 6 – 24 months around the chin region, depending on how each individual responds to the filler ingredients. Some people degrade the filler faster than others.
They are all fully biodegradable and will break down gradually over time. As the absorption times differ with individuals, how the area looks and feels is the best indicator that a top-up is needed.
Are There Side Effects To Chin Augmentation Treatment
There are very few reported side effects with these products, bruising being the most common as with any injections. This is usually minimal and can be covered effectively with make up.
You must mention to your practitioner if you are taking any blood thinning medications ie. aspirin or warfarin as one would be at higher risk of bruising. However, this does not mean that we cannot proceed, it just mean we will take extra care to minimise bruising.
What Is The Aftercare
There is usually some swelling after having chin filler injected and it is advisable to relax and minimise strenuous activity in the 24 hours after having the treatment.
After treatment, anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) can help to reduce the swelling and we will provide you with arnica gel to massage gently into the area. It is important to keep the area dry and clean and not manipulate the area too vigorously.
